How to Convince Your Partner They Need a Container Store Closet Design

My new Container Store (TCS) brand partnership, I knew I wanted to tackle my husband’s closet. Not only was he a great candidate to surprise, he would represent all the resistant partners who don’t fully understand why a custom closet will solve most if not all their wardrobe problems.

From my experience, these type of partners fall into 3 main categories:

1. too afraid to invest

2. skeptical about pro organization as a service

3. too proud to seek a professional.

Regardless of where they fall, I hope to if not convince them why investing in a custom closet is a necessity, I hope to at the very least inspire them to open up to it.

Ok first things first, my husband is already neat, he’s a virgo and is very particular about how he handles his things. These are all the reasons why I chose his closet to tackle because his personality + his neatness will serve as a powerful transformation.

His wardrobe was already decluttered so we were able to skip that step.

While I obviously have a more intimate relationship with him than I do my clients- I didn't have many questions to ask about his pain points because I was a first hand witness to them. But what was great is his pain points were not unique to him but challenges I often come across.

One thing I observed about him, that a lot of my clients deal with is how much time they spend looking for things they use every day.

I knew he needed a system where every single item had a home and he can SEE everything.

THIS my friends is where I a pro organizer and a designer meet.

My amateur design 😅

My amateur design 😅

I sketched out my ideas for the perfect closet then I headed to The Container Store to meet with George, my design consultant would help me bring those ideas to life.

Keep in my mind that you DO NOT need to sketch out a thing, I’m a pro organizer and always have a plan with all my projects. But you can meet with a TCS design consultant empty handed and they can still support you with your closet needs.

I shared with George all the things I wanted for my husband’s closet and he showed me the live examples in the TCS showroom. I was like a kid in a candy shop. Without showing George my sketch, he created a mock closet using TCS Design Center that was a better version of my original idea.

He used the genius in-house design tool that YOU and I can also use if we wanted to, to design our own closet.

We shopped for the closet accessories and BOOM, his closet mockup.

My FAVORITE PART about the entire process was the seamlessness from design to installation. In the same system, we ordered the closet parts + accessories, scheduled an installation, AND a delivery service to deliver the parts to our home. Because I just had a baby and the only thing I’m lifting is a car seat.

And how much do you think this all cost!!

The Design Consult

Custom Closet Parts

Accessories

Closet Installation

Delivery Service with Dolly (optional)

Total Cost= $2,266

Is that more or less than what you were expecting? Most people expect a much higher price tag. This particular price tag was higher because we used the Elfa Decor, a tier above TCS lowest closet system. So this price could’ve been much lower.

I WISH I was saying this to say it but I’m a stan for the Elfa closet system. Three of my favorite facts about the system is:

  1. Its completely customizable- meaning every shelf, drawer, rod, and rack can be changed. NOTHING is permanent

  2. The actual closet can easily be removed and TAKEN with us if we decided to move

  3. TCS offers a service to remove the closet and reinstall it in our new home

I mean this pretty much covers the major concerns ALOT of people have, especially renters.

Fun fact: I did not fold this, my husband did because he’s way better at folding clothes than I am

These accessories originally lived in a dresser that I KNEW we could get rid of. So, my sketch/plan included this 12-section accessory tray which lives on top of 2 drawers. We were able to replace a medium size dresser with these drawers.

I find a lot of clients can do this in their homes with a little planning and condensing their closet.

While we did lose some shoe storage, my husband LOVED his new clear shoe boxes. He’d been struggling with his old system, going into every shoe box because he didn’t know what was inside.

Adding the Elfa door racks to each door was the secret to this new closet. Previously there was so much empty space not being used, this door system is the answer for a lot of random stuff. It can be mounted or hooked onto the door without screws, another customizable system.

This new system will help store all those miscellaneous items neatly and out of sight (my favorite part).
