In today’s day and age, it can be easy to be consumed by stuff. The constant yearning for more and more items is something that can be swiftly taken too far. In order to ditch those hoarder tendencies and live a clean, organized, well-managed life, it is important to declutter when necessary.

Essentials Vs. Non-Essentials

Before throwing any of your items away, it is recommended to make a mental note of what items are “essentials” and “non-essentials”. Of course, “essential” items may be items like: furniture, important documents and files, sentimental items, things you can’t live without, clothes, and other things of that nature. The non-essential items will usually be a longer list and they will consist of things or items that may be broken, damaged, useless, and or overall, don’t bring you joy. The key to decluttering is to remove all of the items that no longer serve a purpose, and that don’t bring you joy. Essential items are what you need in order to live peaceably in your space and will make your life easier. It can be a fine line, though, as many people don’t know when to let go of said items which in turn, creates clutter. It is vital to be honest with yourself and only keep things that you know bring you enjoyment and enhance your life. You may have a myriad of items that may fall into that category of enjoyment, but again, it is very important to get rid of some of those items in order to bring new, exciting items into your space and rid your space of old, useless items.

Will Your Day be Ruined Without it?

To further emphasize this topic of enjoyment, it may be easier to think of your items in this capacity: Will my day be ruined without it? If this particular item were to be randomly placed in your creepy attic that you never go to, do you think you’d forget about it, or would you be actively searching for it because you can’t live without it? If the answer is that you’d likely forget about it, or you wouldn’t deeply care if this item were to go missing, then odds are - you don’t need it. If perhaps this item were to break or become damaged and you wouldn’t attempt to fix it - you don’t need it. If an item or piece of clothing has been sitting in the back of your closet for the last 2 years and when it finally resurfaces you say something along the lines of, “Oh my, gosh! I totally forgot about this…”, throw it out. As people, we become very attached to our things, especially if we have worked very hard to obtain those things. However, it doesn’t do anyone any good to hold on to items or clothing that we no longer utilize and that sits idle amongst our other things. Consider donating your items or clothing so that someone else can put your items to good use. You never know, that simple black top that you found in the back of your drawer that you forgot existed, may very well become someone else’s closet staple! Allow your items to find new homes where they will be treasured, especially if you know that your day will not be ruined if they were no longer in your possession.

Throw away anything that reminds you of negative thoughts

Another great rule of thumb when decluttering your room is to throw out anything that reminds you of negative thoughts. Our rooms are intended to be our safe space, our sanctuaries, a place for us to unwind and be at peace. If you have items in your room that give you bad vibes or remind you of a bad time, you definitely don’t need those items in your sanctuary. As a sensory being, whenever your eyes lock with that item in your room that gives you negative thoughts or reminds you of a dark time, you will only feel that energy as a result. There is no need or necessity to keep hold of things that make us feel sad or down. Your space should have items that bring you joy and allow you to have a clear mind. Having items that ruin your energy with bad vibes will only bring you down. Regardless of whether that item may have sentimental value, if it brings you down, throw it out. Perhaps you have a piece of clothing that belonged to, or reminds you of, an ex. Although that article of clothing may have some happy memories attached to it, if it is throwing off your mental state - say sayonara! Not only are these items taking up space and contributing to clutter in your space, but they are only bringing negative thoughts to your mind. Either way you slice it, those items are not benefiting you and should be thrown out as a result.

You’re in Control!

Although it can be somewhat difficult to declutter and emotionally separate from your items, just remember that you are in control! Your items are not in control of you and although they may have some kind of hold over you, you need to remember that you have the power at the end of the day. Letting go of unwanted, useless, broken, and damaged items can only open up space for you to bring new pieces in that bring you joy and enhance your space as a whole. You have the power to change the entire decluttering experience and also have the power to make the best decisions in order to live peacefully within your room. You can take this process as slow or as fast as you want and have the final say in what stays and what goes. Think about the positives of ridding items from your room, and entertain the thoughts of what new items can take their place. Get rid of all of those items that don’t serve a purpose in order to have a decluttered, organized, and clean space for you to relax and unwind in.
